My Final Project:
The Richard Wagner's tetralogy
The Ring of the Nibelung.

A theater company comes to Barcelona with its show. They’re going to perform the Richard Wagner’s tetralogy called The Ring of the Nibelung in an all day opera . It is a cycle of four epic music dramas that follows one plot: the crazzy struggle for a magic ring. These are: «The Rhinegold», «The Valkyrie», «Siegfried» and finally «The Twilight of the Gods». They’re all based loosely on characters from the Norse sagas and the Nibelungenlied but this time they’ll be performed in a contemporary and non conventional scenography.

My work consisted on thinking about and designing all the graphic material needed in this kind of show.

We’re talking about a romantic story: sublime, passion, strength and full emotion. But I forgot that way and I thought the other way round: I took the rational way to express the complexity of the tetralogy. The infographics, the diagrams were a different way to explain the feelings, the characters, the performers, the voices, the plot. The diagrams allowed two reading levels. First of all, you’ll see abstract coloured shapes and compositions. But in a closer view, everything becomes meaningful.

All diagrams are built from a circular shape. In fact, the ring is the symbol of the plot. I decided to use a colour code: each opera had its own colour.

To sum up the aim of my work was to express music through diagrams built with rings. I thought it was an interesting way to offer opera to new audiences.

Scroll right to see more >> Posters: Four posters, one per opera. Each poster is about one aspect of the tetralogy. «The Rhinegold»: The subject of this poster is the characters with their appearance in each opera. It also shows the kind of voice of every performer. «The Valkyrie»: In this case, the poster shows the four symbolic objects with their meaning and their participation in each opera. «Siegfried»: Here you can find different feelings and their presence in each opera. «The Twilight of the Gods»: This poster explains the plot of the tetralogy by using de concept of agreement/disagreement between characters. The programmes: Inside them you can see the participation of each kind of instruments in the orquestra during every opera. They worked in that way. I also have marked the important moments of the plot. The librettos: In the cover and in every act it’s represented how many times does each character speaks during all the opera or the act. Inside the cover was explained how the diagram worked. The introduction a synopsis of the plot. A detailed view of the first page of an act with the characters and their participation. A close view of the libretto written in German and its translation. The DVD Packs: Here the CD becomes the diagram of the length of every act. I decided to show it by using the transparency of the box. The microsite: With a diagram showing the kind of voices in every opera
